Modern Indian architects have warmed up to the idea of including an attic to the apartments, condos, duplexes and penthouses while designing the layout of houses like their global counterparts. An attic is as much a place of living and functionality as any other part of our homes. With plenty of inspirations and thoughtful designing, one can create an intimate, interesting and personalized niche for oneself or for the children. If you are thinking of adding some space to your home but don't want to build another room on the adjacent floor, then an attic on top of the building is an excellent idea.

Things to consider while designing the Attic:

  • A convenient access to the attic is an important aspect of creating the basic layout around the existing site or when building the house from scratch. Generally staircases take a lot of space so choose spiral staircases over straight ones because spiral ones take up the least amount of carpet area.

  • Exposure to adequate light and air is a must because no one likes their rooms to feel dark and suffocating like a dungeon. So windows should be placed strategically to ensure a well lit and airy living space.

  • Having insulated panels for cold winters and vents for hot air to escape during summers is also very important.

How to choose the Theme

  • You can create an overall color scheme for the attic either complementary or contrast keeping in mind the basic fundamentals of space decoration. Light colors to make the room look spacious and fresh are desirable while darker colors tend to give more depth and dimension to the room.

  • Functionality should be paramount while designing the attic. Specify and discuss among other members of the family what the attic is going to be utilized for in the first place. You can use the attic for creating a playing space for the kids, a quiet niche for your teenage children where they can concentrate on studying and contemplating in peace or for an intimate romantic getaway for you and your beloved. You see Functionality is the father of modern designing.

  • Most people love to use attic as a storage space, a place to either stack away unnecessary, unwanted things or to display their most favorite possessions like artworks, painting, books, travel collectibles etc. If cleverly designed the attic will easily serve both the purposes in the most aesthetic manner.

  • If you are an introvert who loves to retreat from the world from time to time then an attic can be your place of hideaway giving you the space to indulge in activities that give you a sense of peace and comfort.

  • The writer in you may find solace and inspiration from the view and silence that an attic can provide because writing, painting or in fact any creative or artistic endeavors require a tremendous amount of mental peace and freedom to explore the many possibilities of work in progress.

Creating a happy, personalized, cosy nook for yourself and your family is a great way to live in modern dream homes. Attics are the best way to achieve loft conversions whether it is boho style or in wood decor, it will definitely serve as your modern day Man Cave.
